Update: Seneca Valley Girls Lacrosse Team Defeated at Penn State

The girls lost in the first round of the PIAA Girls Lacrosse playoffs.

High heat and humidity didn’t slow down the offenses on either side as lost an 18-10 shootout to Penn Manor in the first round of the PIAA Girls Lacrosse Playoffs on Wednesday at Penn State’s University Park Campus.

“The girls played very well to the end,” Seneca Valley coach Dina Hughes said. “It was very hot, and it seemed like we had to play catch-up for almost the whole game.

“We had to make sure everybody had enough fluids and kept hydrated,” she said.

Seneca Valley, which won its first WPIAL Division I Girls Lacrosse Championship last week, finished the season with a 15-4 overall record.

“It ended with a loss (in the state playoffs), but it was a successful season and the girls should be proud of what they accomplished,” Hughes said.

Seneca Valley senior attacker Sam Struss scored four goals in her final game, and junior midfielder Morgan Midkiff added three goals.

“We had five different girls score goals for us, so they weren’t able to concentrate on defending just one or two of our players,” Hughes said.

The Raiders lost to District 3 lacrosse power Penn Manor last season, so Hughes knew it could turn into a high-scoring game again.

“We knew we had our work cut out for us,” she said.

The Raiders won the WPIAL title with a 12-11 victory over Sewickley Academy (12-7) last Thursday night at North Hills High School’s Martorelli Stadium.

As the winner of the PIAA’s District 7, Seneca Valley advanced to the state playoffs.

After winning WPIAL titles in baseball and girls lacrosse, one final Raiders team remains in contention for WPIAL gold medals.

The Raiders softball team competes against Latrobe for the Class AAAA title at 7 p.m. tonight at California University’s Lilly Field.
