Seneca Valley Boys Soccer Team Climbs into 2nd Place in Section Standings

Raiders defeat North Allegheny, 3-2, after falling behind by two goals.

After an eventful week that included celebrating its annual Senior Night, the boys soccer team continues to move up in the playoff hunt.

On Thursday, the Raiders defeated rival North Allegheny Tigers, 3-2. The win, combined with a Butler loss to Pine-Richland on Thursday, put Seneca Valley in second place in the Section 2 standings.

NA started the scoring early Thursday on a cross against the SV defense. The Raiders had several scoring opportunities, but could not convert before halftime, giving NA the lead in the first half.

The Tigers also drew first blood in the second half, making the score 2-0. The Raiders offense came to life midway through the half. On a corner kick, the ball was delivered to Mike Chowansky, who converted SV’s first score on a header into the net. The Raiders' second goal came just a few minutes later when Stephan McConahy floated a direct kick over the head of the NA keeper.

With less than two minutes left, the Tigers committed a penalty inside the NA box, giving Seneca Valley a penalty kick -- and a chance to take the lead. Andreas Fatschel positioned the shot low and to his right, beating the NA goalie and putting the Raiders ahead. Seneca Valley’s defense held off the Tigers for the final 90 seconds of the game.

Seniors Celebrated

Before Saturday’s non-section game against West Allegheny, Seneca Valley celebrated its 12 graduating seniors with its annual Senior Night. The soon-to-be high school graduates marched across the field with their parents and received words of congratulations from the coaches and the other soccer players. A slide show by George DeAugustino honoring the seniors played during the night, which also recognized the school’s senior girls soccer members.

The evening ended on a down note as the Raiders fell to the Indians 3-0. This will not affect section play.
