Principal Steven Smith to Depart Seneca Valley for Neighboring District

The longtime principal at Haine Middle School was hired as principal at a Pine-Richland elementary school.

Longtime Haine Middle School principal Steven Smith will depart Seneca Valley for a new position as principal at Upper Eden Hall Elementary in the Pine-Richland School District.

“I’m so sad to be leaving,” he said. “I spent so many years there.”

Smith, of Adams Township, was hired at Monday’s Pine-Richland School Board meeting.  He will be paid a salary of $110,000 in his new role.

Smith, who has been with Seneca Valley for 14 years, said he would miss the district. Prior to becoming principal at Haine Middle School in 2007, Smith was a teacher and assistant principal within Seneca Valley.

Smith said the Upper Eden Hall Elementary building helped attract him to Pine-Richland.

Opened in 2008, the building, which serves fourth, fifth and sixth graders, was designed with curriculum in mind and includes murals and color schemes throughout to represent the Earth's five biomes, according to Pine-Richland officials.

“The structure and the design of the building with the programs that can be developed there was very enticing,” Smith said. “I really wanted the opportunity to be part of that.”

Smith said he does not yet have a starting date with the Pine-Richland School District. He plans to officially inform Seneca Valley of his resignation Tuesday, he said.

Seneca Valley spokeswoman Linda Andreassi said the district's administration team would begin an immediate search for Smith's replacement.

"We have the utmost respect for Mr. Smith and wish him well," she said.

Seneca Valley students return to class Aug. 28.
