New Meaning: Haine Elementary Students Receive Personalized Dictionaries

The Sunrise Cranberry Rotary delivers the books to Haine's third-grade students.

Anyone searching for the meaning of “generosity” can just ask students at Haine Elementary School—after all, they’re the ones with the new dictionaries.

In November, members of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Cranberry Township made their annual visit to the school to distribute personalized dictionaries to third-grade students.

Assistant principal Mandy Toy said the seven Rotarians also spoke to the students about service in the community.

“The teachers kept the Rotary visit a secret from the students and the looks on their faces when these visitors announced they were each getting their own dictionary was priceless,” Toy said in an email to Patch.

The club members also discussed the importance of using the dictionaries, modeled how to find words and showed students how to use the other resources within the reference guides, Toy said.

“The entire event lasted about 30 minutes, however, the third grade hall was buzzing with excitement for the remainder of the day,” she said.
