Cranberry Revs Up Effort to Slow Down Speeders

The township will once again participate in the national Drive 25 program.

As part of the Slow-Down program, yard signs, speed trailers and traffic counters will be added to 14 neighborhoods. There also will be increased police patrols in those areas.

The weeklong effort, which begins Monday, Aug. 27, is built around the Keep Kids Alive—Drive 25 Foundation, a program designed to raise driver awareness of the 25 mph speed limit in place in most residential areas.

A weeklong campaign also took place in Cranberry in June, just as students were let out of school for the summer.

According to the township, there typically are more children and pets on and around the roadways during peak commuting hours as children head back to class than there are during the summer recess.

Township assistant manager Duane McKee has said the idea of participating in the national program came from members of Cranberry’s various homeowner associations. Last year was the first for the program in the township.

Cranberry Township Community Chest, , ReMax Select Realty and the township government are underwriting the costs for the program, including the signs.

Typically, the township collects before and after traffic data during the slow down campaign and shares the results with homeowners. McKee has said data from 2011 suggested there were some reductions in speeding during the program.

  • Hampshire Woods
  • Walden Pond
