Ten Household Hazardous Waste Collection Dates set

Disposing of household hazardous wastes and consumer electronics will be more convenient for Cranberry area residents in 2011 than in previous years.  A collection program authorized by the Butler County Board of Commissioners with funding from the state Department of Environmental Protection will accept an assortment of household chemicals, batteries, and old electronic equipment for disposal on ten Saturdays between the end of April and the end of October at a depot in Evans City.

The program’s contractor, ecological engineering and consulting company ECS&R of Crawford County, will take materials brought for disposal to the collection site at the corner of Rt. 68 and Ash Stop Road, across from the Forward Township building in Evans City starting April 30 by appointment only.

Anyone wanting to dispose of eligible items or with questions about product eligibility should call 1-866-815-0016 in advance to set a drop-off time.

A schedule of fees applies to the disposal of the items accepted.  For chemicals including paints, automotive products, pesticides, cleaning products, and pool chemicals, as well as fluorescent bulbs and propane cylinders, the fee is 63¢ per pound.  Wet cell and mercury battery disposal is 50¢ a pound.  Electronic devices such as TVs, computers, stereos, fax machines and VCRs are 15¢ a pound.

For reference, a full gallon of paint would weigh around ten pounds and cost $6.30 to dispose of.  Getting rid of a 40-pound TV set would cost $6.  A 20-pound car battery would cost $10 to discard.
