Cranberry Recognizes Three Businesses for Sustainability

Cranberry Township's Business Hub—its service center for local businesses—has awarded the first three designations to local organizations honoring their practices as sustainable businesses.

The program recognizes company efforts in energy conservation, diversity, community service, governance, storm water management and building occupancy.

The three initial honorees are Piedmont Plastics, RJ Development and Cranberry Township’s government, a statement from the township said.

A privately-held distributor of plastic sheet, rod, tube and film products located in the Thomson Business Park, Piedmont Plastics was engaged in the environmental movement—as well as in operating as an employee-friendly business—well before the launch of the Sustainable Business designation program in the spring, according to the township.

Located on Route 19, RJ Development is a three-person operation that manages property for local homeowners associations, condominiums and apartment owners. The company completed the application form primarily to find out whether their environmentally-conscious housekeeping practices would qualify them for the designation, the township said.

has adopted a variety of sustainable practices in managing its energy, water use, waste and business policies, was also certified.  

The program is an outgrowth of the board of supervisors adoption in 2008 of sustainability principles as part of its comprehensive planning process.
The Sustainable Business designation was developed in cooperation with the nonprofit organization Sustainable Pittsburgh.  It uses an online checklist completed by the company to indicate policies and practices in a variety of areas.
