Update: Cranberry Police Say Speed to Blame for Crash that Injured Four Teens

Cranberry Police said a female teenage driver was speeding before she crashed in front of the Manheim Auto Auction along Route 19 in Cranberry Friday, injuring herself and three others.

“It appears just to be speed issues,” said Sgt. Chuck Mascellino, who added the teen was not texting or using her phone when the one-car crash occurred.

Of the four juveniles in the car Friday, Mascellino said the 17-year-old driver was the most seriously injured. The teen, a Valencia resident, had broken bones and a head injury, he said.

The other passengers, a 19-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy suffered minor injuries, Mascellino said. All three of those teens are from Gibsonia.

Mascellino said the driver would receive a citation for speeding.

The teens were heading south on Route 19 at about 8 p.m. Friday when the driver lost control of the car, police said. The red Chevrolet Cavalier then went up an embankment before striking a pole and a wire fence in front of the auction.

All four teens were taken by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital.

Cpl. William Ahlgren, who responded to the crash Friday, said the juveniles either extricated themselves or were helped from the vehicle.

“Everyone was able to get out of the car or was assisted out of the car,” he said.

Ahlgren said he believes all four juveniles were wearing seatbelts.
