Turnpike Detour Lifted Between Cranberry and Hampton after Tractor-Trailer Rollover

The Pennsylvania Turnpike eastbound between Cranberry and Hampton re-opened Saturday evening after being closed for hours while a tractor-trailer that rolled over was removed from the highway.

State police said the crash occurred at about 2:50 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike about six miles west of the Butler Valley/Exit 39 interchange.

As of 8:45 p.m., traffic was no longer being detoured, but the right lane was closed while the tractor-trailer was removed, according to the turnpike's "Trip Talk" alert system.

The truck struck an embankment and rolled over on the right lane of traffic, according to Cpl. Karl Schmidhamer. The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to UPMC for treatment, he said.

Earlier in the afternoon, Schmidhamer said the turnpike would be shut down about 5 p.m. and remain closed until the truck was hauled away.

“We’re hoping it will be for less than an hour, but you never know with these things,” he said, adding that traffic had been light.
