Township, Police Plan Benefits for Recovering Officer

Corporal Dan Hahn is undergoing physical therapy after serious injuries to his neck and back.

It was a little more than a week ago that the the officer was in a medically induced coma after serious injuries to his neck and back after a high-speed car chase.

Today, not only is Hahn awake, he is talking and undergoing physical therapy at an undisclosed rehabilitation center.

“He’s doing much better,” said Jeff Schueler, Cranberry’s public safety director. “He’s been moving forward more than I think anyone thought he would.”

At the request of Hahn’s family, Schueler said he could not reveal more about the officer’s condition. He said the police officer is progressing daily.

Hahn, 47, was one of many officers from five police departments who pursued Thomas Booth during a Feb. 14 that started in Sewickley Heights and ended on Interstate 79 in Jackson Township.

After Jackson Township police deployed spikes to deflate Booth’s tires, he got out of his car and jumped over a nearby Jersey barrier to escape from police. Hahn followed, and both men fell 22 feet from an overpass to the ground near Tollgate Road.

Booth, 22, died from his injuries the next day. A helicopter transported Hahn to Allegheny General Hospital, where he underwent surgery for injuries to his neck and back.

Since the accident, the community has offered good wishes to the married father of two adult children, including The police department also is accepting donations for Hahn and his family.

“A lot of people have been asking about him,” Schueler said.

The police department and  the township also are planning two benefits for Hahn.

Cranberry will sponsor a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 17 at council chambers inside the on Rochester Road.

On April 16, the police department will hold a spaghetti dinner for Hahn from 3 to 7 p.m. at Oldenski Hall inside St. Ferdinand’s Church in Cranberry. Tickets can be purchased at the door. The suggested donation is $6.

A fund also has been created through the Fraternal Order of Police to assist the Hahn family. Anyone wishing to send a donation may mail it to:
