Update: Teen Struck, Killed on I-79 in Lancaster Township

State police continue to investigate the death of a 17-year-old boy from Zelienople who was killed early Saturday morning after he was walking on Interstate 79 and was struck by two tractor-trailer trucks.

Troopers at the Butler barracks said Joseph Barone was standing near the dashed white line in the right lane of the highway's southbound traffic in Lancaster Township at about 1 a.m. when he was hit by the first tractor-trailer. The impact caused the boy to be thrown into the left lane of travel.

The teen was then struck by at least one other tractor-trailer, which threw his body from the highway, according to police.

The Butler County Coroner’s office pronounced him dead at the scene at about 4 a.m. There were no other injuries.

spokeswoman Linda Andreassi said Barone was a former student in the district. He last attended Seneca Valley in the 2010-2011 school year.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Mr. Joseph Barone," she said. "While not currently enrolled in our district, he did attend previously and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends during this time."

Andreassi said preparations are being made to have counselors available for students once school resumes on Monday.
