Police Arrest Two Robbery Suspects Off I-79 in Wexford

Fidelity Bank in Ross Township robbed.

Following a chase and crash late Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 79, police arrested two men who are suspected in a bank robbery in Ross Township.

Police chased the suspects through Ross Township and into Franklin Park, where their vehicle crashed on I-79 near the Mingo Road overpass.

The suspects ran from the crash scene, but police arrested them a short time later.

One was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

State police and officers from Ross, Ohio Twp., Evans City, Cranberry and Franklin Park are now combing the woods, looking for weapons they believe the suspects threw into the brush, KDKA-TV reports

Evans City Police said investigators called the station's K-9 officer, Sgt. Don Myers, to the scene with his dog.

Ross police say the incident began with a robbery at the Fidelity Bank, 1009 Perry Highway. Officers were still interviewing bank employees late Wednesday afternoon, and they could not say if the suspects were armed when they held up the bank and fled in the vehicle.

The crash backed up traffic for several miles on northbound I-79.

Patch reader Karin Trauman reported seeing at least a dozen vehicles and investigators who responded from many local municipalities, including Ross, Ohio Township, Franklin Park, state patrol and the DEA. Two helicopters also were hovering above the area, she said.

All lanes of the highway are now open.

Keep checking back with Patch for updates.
