The accident caused the highway to be shut down for several hours.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office has identified the motorcycle rider killed in Sunday’s fatal accident on Route 8 in Richland Township.

Pamela McCarthy, 68, of Valencia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Route 8 was shut down for more than three hours after the motorcycle McCarthy was driving collided with a pickup truck near Tom Henry Chevrolet at about 3 p.m.

Northern Regional Police Chief Bob Amman said McCarthy was driving a three-wheeled Harley Davidson trike south on William Flynn Highway when the truck in front of her stopped to make a left turn into the car dealership.

McCarthy failed to stop and slammed into the rear of the truck, Amman said.

"She was thrown from the motorcycle," he said.

The chief said the driver of the pickup truck, a Valencia man, was uninjuried. No charges are expected to be filed against him.

Police continue to investigate the crash, Amman said.

Bystanders in the area near Heckert Road said they heard a loud booming sound, similar to an explosion, when the accident occurred.

By 6 p.m. the highway was reopened to traffic. Motorists were detoured via Heckert Road while Route 8 was closed.
