Getting rid of your unwanted drugs in the proper way also can help the environment.

Many who do not know how to properly dispose of unused medicine wind up flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away, which are potential safety and health hazards. Sewage treatment plants are not designed to remove most pharmaceuticals, and flushed drugs enter waterways and ultimately into drinking water.

Saturday's event is part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s fourth National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. A number of other police departments around the Pittsburgh area also will be participating in the event.

During the last Take Back Day on October 29, 2011, more than 188 tons of unwanted and expired medications were collected at 5,327 sites across the nation. Since its inception, the effort has safely and properly disposed of nearly 500 tons of prescription drugs.

There is no charge for the disposal service.
