UPDATED: Cranberry Firefighters Battle Second Blaze at Property Owned by Pittsburgh Diocese

The property on Old Mars Crider Road is the future home of North Catholic High School.

Cranberry firefighters early Thursday morning battled a on property owned by the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Firefighters were called to Old Mars Crider Road around 1 a.m. Fire chief Brian Kovac said the fire was at the same vacant multi-unit apartment building where volunteers battled a fire Wednesday morning. It is one of two abandoned buildings located on the future site of North Catholic High School.

Kovac said the state police fire marshal could not determine the cause of Thursday's fire. He believes it likely was a rekindling of Wednesday's flames. Firefighters remained on site Thursday even after the fire was knocked out, he said.

"We kept the crew there for a couple of hours in case it kicked back up," he said.

Father Ronald Lengwin, spokesman for the Pittsburgh Diocese, had said the vacant buildings were used by area firefighters for training exercises. Prior to the fires, the buildings were set to be demolished to make room for the school, he said.

Kovac said there was training at the abandoned building Tuesday, but it did not involve his fire department. Cranberry police were unable to confirm which fire department trained at the site on Tuesday.
