Cranberry Breaks Ground on 9/11 Memorial

Firefighters hope to raise $50,000 to build a memorial around a piece of World Trade Center steel.

Hundreds of people turned out Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on America, for a groundbreaking ceremony at the 's Park Station.

Silver shovels in hand, the volunteers were there to they plan to build around a piece of twisted steel that fell from the World Trade Center.

The ceremony kicked off with a presentation of colors by the fire department's honor guard. After a welcome by fire company president Bruce Hezlep, 9/11 committee chairman Jeff Berneburg unveiled design plans for the memorial.

Cranberry Township Supervisor Bruce Mazzoni also presented firefighters with a check for $10,000 on behalf of the Cranberry Township Community Chest.

No tax dollars will be used for the monument. Firefighters are hoping to raise $50,000 for the project.

Anyone interested in giving to memorial may go to the fire company’s website for information about how to donate. Firefighters hope to have the memorial complete by April 21, 2012.
