Car Smashes into Bus Carrying Butler School Children on Route 19

No elementary students were injured in the three-car pileup in Cranberry. The bus driver is taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

No elementary students were injured after a car struck a bus carrying children from the Butler Area School District on Route 19 in Cranberry Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the bus was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with minor injuries, according to Cranberry Police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino.

Mascellino said an SUV that pulled out of the Dairy Queen parking lot was crossing the highway when it struck a car traveling south on Route 19.

The impact caused the passenger side of the car to smash into the driver’s side of the bus, which was stopped at the intersection of Progress Avenue and Route 19. 

Neither the driver of the car or the SUV, whose names were not released, were injured, Mascellino said.

Mascellino said the students were on their way back to Butler following a fieldtrip to the Pittsburgh Playhouse when they stopped at for a picnic.

The students had boarded to bus and were on their way back to class when the car stuck the bus.

 A replacement bus from the Valley Lines quickly was sent to pick up the children and take them back to Butler, Mascellino said. He estimated about 40 elementary students were on the bus.

Police continue to investigate the crash. Mascellino said it was undetermined yet if charges would be filed in the incident.
