My style of counseling is conversational, while my approach is practical, present focused and experiential. In my practice, I draw from a variety of treatment approaches individualized to the uniqueness of every person. Among these are Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Person Centered Therapy.

Q: Where did you go to school and where did you receive your training?

I attended Carlow University, attaining a BS in Psychology in 2004 and a MS in Professional Counseling in 2007. I have been working as a helping professional since 2004, holding a number of positions within UPMC, as well as other local agencies.

Q: What does therapy mean to you?

I believe that therapy is about change and growth.

Q: What makes therapy successful?

There are a number of variables that factor into a successful outcome in therapy. As a therapist, I believe that establishing a strong therapeutic alliance is by far the most important. Once this has developed, I have found that clients are more open to the process of therapy. When clients possess a desire to change and are willing to entertain alternative approaches the likelihood of successful therapy can be greatly increased. In my experience, most clients report having benefited from therapy.

Q: What is your life philosophy?

I believe that each of us is here for a reason, a greater purpose. We all have the challenge of discovering the path that will lead us in this direction. I have embraced the understanding that I am simply a small part of a vast universe, something far greater than myself. I hold a strong belief in people and all the positive qualities they possess. I am constantly working to lead a healthier lifestyle by expanding my knowledge base and making more informed decisions. I believe that we all have the potential to improve ourselves in some way each and every day.

Q: How would you describe yourself in three words?

Dedicated, Compassionate and Empathetic

Q: What was the funniest thing you have ever experienced?

During my tenure as a community based clinician, my supervisor disclosed a funny story, during a team meeting. The story had the entire team laughing hysterically, including myself. As I laughed I noticed that a pain in my right side. Apparently, I had laughed so hard that a small amount of cartilage, between my ribs, became dislodged. For the next two weeks, I was forced to avoid laughter, while my ribs healed, although having to attend team meetings made this extremely difficult.

Q: What is your favorite art form and why?

As far back as I can remember, I have always had a passion for art. Having briefly studied art in college, I was exposed to a number mediums and genres all of which caught my interest. If I had to pick just one art from, it would be painting. Having painted myself, I appreciate the challenge of weaving together design and color to create a canvas that is appealing to the viewer. Some of my favorite painters are Jackson Pollock, Willem DeKooning, and Pablo Picasso.
