What's Closed on Labor Day 2013?

With Labor Day Monday, the unofficial end of summer is here.

While most people celebrate the holiday by taking time off from work, doing a little relaxing, or maybe catching one last day at the pool, it wasn't always that way.

The first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters and Joiners Union secretary, organized the event.

By 1893, more than half the states were observing Labor Day in one way or another. Congress passed a bill to establish a federal holiday in 1894. 

President Grover Cleveland signed the bill soon afterward, designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day.

Here's a look at what's closed in the area.

Cranberry Township's offices will be closed Monday, as will the Cranberry Public Library and the Seneca Valley School District. 

State and county offices, state liquor stores, and Pennsylvania drivers' license and photo centers will be closed.

Trash and recycling pickup by Waste Management will be delayed one day.

Monday also is the last day of the swim season at the Cranberry Waterpark, EDCO Pool and the Zelienople Community Pool.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County also will operate all bus, light-rail and incline service on a holiday schedule during Labor Day.
