National Treasure

National Treasure
Friday - Sunday, January 25 - 27
Starring Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger & Justin Bartha

A MUST-SEE ON THE BIG SCREEN!

You would think that Hollywood would have taken a lesson from the release of 2004’s National Treasure. Here was a film that had it all: a great story, intense action, complex characters, intrigue and plenty of well-placed lessons in American history. The film grossed over $325 million and was the Box Office champ that year. Disney and Director Jerry Bruckheimer proved that all of this could be accomplished and still land a PG rating, satisfying action movie fans as well as families looking for something more than a CGI cartoon. But despite the film’s success, as well as it’s sequel, Book of Secrets, Hollywood still insists that PG-13 is the standard bearer for attracting a more ’sophisticated’ audience.

Cage plays the role of Benjamin Franklin Gates, who descends from a family of treasure-seekers who've all hunted for the same thing: a war chest hidden by the Founding Fathers after the Revolutionary War. Ben's close to discovering its wherea-bouts, as is his competition, but the FBI is also hip to the hunt.

The movie suggests that there is something written on the back of the Declaration of Independence, and this is indeed the case. The writing on the back of the Declaration reads, "Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776", and it appears at the bottom of the document, upside down. While no one knows for certain who wrote it, it is known that early in its existence, the large parchment document was rolled up for storage. So it is likely that the notation was simply added as a type of label.
