Walt Disney had been pursuing the film rights to the Mary Poppins book series from P.L. Travers since 1938. But the Author refused for years, mainly because she didn't think her work would translate well to film, and Disney, up until that time, hadn't produced a live action film. But Travers finally relented in 1961 and allowed Disney to purchase the rights while she retained final script approval.

Disney's patience paid off as the film became the Box Office champion of 1964 and garnered 13 Oscar nominations, winning 5 of them, the largest number of wins for a Disney movie before or since. While Mary Poppins went on to become one of the most beloved films of all time, it is rumored that Travers detested the film to her dying day. She was reportedly very upset that the Mary Poppins character was changed from cool and aloof to warm and charming as made famous by Julie Andrews. She was so bitter about it that she even resisted having the book series turned into a live action musical theatre program over 40 years later.

The Sherman brothers (Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman) wrote over 30 songs during the various stages of the film's development.  And it was at their suggestion that the setting of the film be changed from the 1930s to the Edwardian Era.
