Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Friday - Sunday, February 1 - 3
Starring Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Grey & Mia Sara

Director John Hughes scored yet another coming-of-age blockbuster with the release of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in 1986. Having well established himself with such 80s hits as Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science, Hughes was also credited with the formation of the ‘Brat Pack’; a group of young 80s movie stars that seemed to congregate around his projects.

Ferris Bueller was also Matthew Broderick’s break-out role, playing a smart and likeable rebel, who just wants one more day off of school before graduation. While Broderick landed the part, several other well-known actors were considered for it, including Rob Lowe, John Cusack, Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr. and Michael J. Fox. Anthony Michael Hall turned down the role for fear of being typecast.

The 1961 Ferrari GT250 that was used so prominently in the film, was in fact, not a Ferrari at all, but a modified MG sports car. Renting a Ferrari was too expensive, so the producers put fiberglass bodies on three MGs to film the various scenes, including the scene in which the car flies backwards through a plate glass window. This prompted several angry letters from car enthusiasts who believed the car shown was a *real* Ferrari being wrecked for a movie.

Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward, who played Ferris's parents, married in real life after filming this movie.
