Union-Backed Amendments to SB 612 = Disastrous Results

More taxpayer dollars taken out of the classroom and put in the pockets of senior union members. Find out why...

When Mike Folmer, R-48, designed Senate Bill 612, the intent was to permit school districts to furlough professional staff for economic reasons. Unfortunately, the bill has been hijacked and corrupted with amendments backed by the Pennsylvania State Education Association!

As originally proposed, SB 612 was exactly what school districts needed: a means to reduce staff in areas having the least impact on education, when economic times are bad.

What happened is that the PSEA insisted on amendments that require administrators to consider seniority when reducing staff, and also furlough a proportional amount of administrators and teachers.

Would anyone like to guess what that's REALLY going to do? If you said administrators are going to pad their staff, go to the head of the class.

And because administrators are going to need that pad to, let's say, prevent principals from answering phones and running payroll, schools are going to have even LESS money for programs and teachers! Oh, remember the seniority requirement? Junior teachers cost less; therefore more junior teachers will have to lose their jobs to make up the difference.

Good job guys! Once again, the PSEA is looking out for its most senior members, at the expense of junior teachers, children and taxpayers.

Please call your Senator and Representative and tell them to strip out the proportional furlough requirement from SB 612, and vote "Yes" to the Cox amendment that eliminates the seniority-based furlough requirement:

Rep. Daryl D. Metcalfe, (724) 772-3110

Sen. Jane C. Orie, (724) 776-3500
