What's That Smell? Dominion Adding Odorant to Gas

The smelly odor does not pose a threat to residents.

If you live in the area of Glen Eden Road and smell natural gas, don't panic -- it's the gas company adding an odorant to the air.

Duane McKee, Cranberry's assistant township manager, said Dominion Transmissions is injecting the odorant into the pipes at the valve station on Glen Eden Road.

The smell, which is similar to rotten eggs, is used to notify people if there is a gas leak in the area.

“Every gas company applies it to their product to help with gas leaks,” McKee said.

The odor is expected to hang around the area for the next three hours.

McKee said the valve station contains two high-pressure lines that are used to transmit gas cross-country. The valves are not used for service to homes.

He noted the odor is not a danger to residents.
