Slide Show: Sam Bucci Memorial Fishing Derby

Annual scholarship fundraiser at Moraine State Park honors the memory of the Seneca Valley High School senior.

On Saturday, friends and family held the second annual at Moraine State Park.

Bucci, 18, and two other Seneca Valley High School seniors after a tragic car accident in January 2010.

Seneca Valley senior Justin Stanger, a friend who played with Bucci on the school's baseball team, organized this year's event, which raised money for the Sam Bucci Memorial Scholarship.

Jan Stanger, Justin's mother, said 61 people registered for the derby and numerous spectators attended the event. She said 24 local businesses also donated money, prizes, or food for the derby.

Jan Stanger said contestants brought in six fish to be weighed. The grand prize for bass went to Zach Spangler, who caught a 2.7-pound bass. The catfish prize went to Bruce Waldenmyer, who wrangled an 8.3-pound catfish, and Tim Cox took the walleye prize for his 3.1-pound walleye.

The day brought in $2,000 for the scholarship, Jan Stanger said, and more pledged donations are on the way. She expects the total for the scholarship fund to be more than $3,000.

Interviews for the scholarship will be conducted next week. Its recipient will be announced at the Raider Baseball Banquet on May 1, at the
