Glade Run Conservancy Plans Townhall Meeting

The grassroots group is dedicated to restoring Glade Run Lake in Middlesex.

A group dedicated to restoring the 52-acre Glade Run Lake in Middlesex Township is having a townhall meeting later this month.

The Glade Run Lake Conservancy, established by a group of concerned citizens, will host the meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 25 in the Mars Area High School auditorium.

The group wants to share its vision to resolve safety issues at the lake and offer the public a chance to ask questions.

In the spring of 2011, the state Department of Environmental Protection declared the leaking dam impounding the lake was in "highly hazardous" condition. The state Fish and Boat Commission was ordered to draw down the lake to a safe level.

The conservancy estimates costs to rebuild the spillway and improve the dam around $4 million, costs the Fish and Boat Commission is unable to help fund because it relies on fees from licenses and registrations.

Restoration efforts have received endorsements from Adams, Buffalo, Butler, Clinton, Harmar, Indiana, Jefferson and Middlesex townships. Middlesex Supervisors have even pledged $30,000 of support, the conservancy's website states.

The effort is also seeing community support.  The Tribune Review reports the conservancy has raised more than $114,000 through membership fees, donations and pledges since the organization's inception 18 months ago.

Sen. Randy Vulakovich, R-Shaler, whose district includes the lake, told the Trib he plans to talk with other state leaders and work with the Fish and Boat Commission to try to find economic development funds or room in the state budget to repair the dam.

Vulakovich is one of the speakers slated for the townhall meeting. Others include representatives from Fish and Boat Commission, and Butler County Commissioner Jim Eckstein.
