'Farm Kings' Take the Crown at Glade Run's Annual Fundraiser

The reality star family from Butler County won the first-ever celebrity guest waiter competition.

The family from the popular reality television show Farm Kings recently took part in a celebrity waiter competition—and were ultimately crowned the winners—at a sold-out fundraiser for Glade Run in Zelienople.

Freedom Farms in Butler County is run by Lisa King and her 10 children, who are followed by cameras for the GAC network reality show.

But the family was in an entirely different spotlight as one of six area farms that agreed to serve up a locally-sourced luncheon at the 10th annual Spring Symposium, "Living in Your Backyard."

The Kings went head to head with Doug Oster from KDKA radio and WQED, as well as Soergels Orchards in Wexford, Kretschmann's Farm in Beaver County, Blackberry Meadows in Natrona Heights, Brenckle's in Zelienople and Harvest Valley in Valencia.

The farm that received the highest tip went home with a tractor trophy to display for the year. The highest tipping table meanwhile had the first pick of a variety of delicacies from local bakeries.

The Farm Kings were crowned the winners of the inaugural celebrity guest waiter competition.

Sheila Talarico, executive director of the Glade Run Foundation, said the event, held on the foundation's 325-acre campus in Zelienople, helped raise $20,000 for Glade Run Adventures, a therapeutic animal and horticulture program for children with emotional and developmental disabilities.

"It is a therapeutic equine, animal and horticulture program for the kids in residence at Glade Run, students at our licensed private school St. Stephen's, and the community at large," Talarico said. "We have outdoor gardens, raised bed gardens, and a nice greenhouse that is used for educational and therapeutic activities."

She said the funds raised will be used for greenhouse repairs for the therapeutic horticulture program.

Founded in 1854, Glade Run remains the third oldest operational orphanage in the nation.

Today the agency serves children with emotional and developmental disabilities and offers educational, mental health, cultural and autism services across Western Pennsylvania to children and families.
