Sweet! Get a Free Donut for National Donut Day

It seems like there is a special day for just about everything these days—and the donut is no exception.

National Donut Day is Friday. In honor of the big day, donut shops across the nation—including the —are handing out free donuts to customers.

To get a free donut at Dunkin Donuts you did need to purchase a hot or cold beverage—and you may want to do this early in the day. According to the company’s Behind the Beans blog, stores will hand out one free donut of your choice, but only while supplies last.

, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, also is in on the deal. All you have to do there is show up to get your free donut. No purchase is necessary.

Although Krispy Kreme no longer is in Cranberry (), there is a store in Washington County. If don’t mind driving a bit (OK, a lot) further to get your Original Glaze on, there also are locations in Erie and Akron, Ohio.   

Celebrated on the first Friday in June each year, the national day was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.

The Salvation Army this year is teaming up with baking company Entenmann's to help celebrate National Donut Day. Entenmann's will donate proceeds from sales and offer customers a chance to win free donuts for a year by entering a contest on its Facebook page. Entenmann's donuts can be found at area grocery stores, including and Seven Fields.
