Coming Soon? Developers Still Hoping to Lure Trader Joe's to North Hills

Cranberry area readers keep asking, is Trader Joe's coming here?

As soon as the weather breaks, Cranberry area residents can expect to see construction get underway next year on the final phase of the nearby McCandless Crossing development in McCandless Township.

Phase Four of the development is on the east side of McKnight Road between Duncan Avenue and Cumberland Road.

It includes five restaurants, three of which have already signed, 50 townhomes, and a 12-screen Cinemark Movie Theater—and that's just for starters.

The town of McCandless and developer AdVenture Development also are hoping to lure a very popular specialty grocery store.

That's right, a Trader Joe's grocery store.

"We'd love to have Trader Joe's, but that's not a definite, they haven't signed," said Bruce Betty, town of McCandless Land Use Administrator told North Allegheny Patch back in December.

When asked by the Pittsburgh Business Times whether McCandless Crossing was negotiating with Trader Joe’s or Fresh Market, Kevin Dougherty, principal of AdVenture, said he couldn’t comment but that it would be welcome to the project.

Residents in the Cranberry area have expressed a strong desire for a Trader Joe's.

When Cranberry Patch asked readers what they would like to see occupy the space at the former Kuhn's market on Route 19, almost overwhelmingly, readers said they’d like to see Trader Joe’s move into the spot.

When asked for ideas about the site of the former Dick's Sporting Goods on Route 19, the answer was the same. It seemed everyone wanted a Trader Joe's.

Dick’s Sporting Goods has since submitted a building permit application to renovate the vacated space into a new sporting goods concept store called Field & Stream.

Right now, the closest Trader Joe's are in Pittsburgh's East end at 6343 Penn Avenue and 1630 Washington Road in Upper St. Clair.
