Celebrate Mom This Weekend

Area businesses give moms the special treatment. Also, where did Mother's Day come from? Answers below!

Mom – she knows the best and the worst of you. She wiped away your tears, she dressed you, hugged you, kissed your boo-boos and she loved you. She is your biggest fan. Celebrate her this weekend with some of these events happening around the community. But first, share a little Mother's Day history with Mom. She's sure to enjoy it!

Mother’s Day Evolution

According to Mother’s Day Central, Julia Ward Howe came up with the first North American Mother’s Day in 1870 when, saddened by the deaths from the Civil War, she wrote a Mother's Day Proclamation that called for peace and celebrated motherhood.

June 2 was designated for the celebration and, in 1873, women’s groups in 18 North American cities observed this new holiday.

While the first Mother's Day didn't catch on, Howe's idea led to the holiday we today celebrate. Years later, a West Virginia women’s group led by Anna Reeves Jarvis adopted Howe’s holiday and held a Mother's Friendship Day with the intent of reconnecting friends and families divided by the Civil War.

After Anna Reeves Jarvis died, her daughter, Anna M. Jarvis, picked up the tradition and lobbied for an official Mother’s Day in remembrance of her mother and one that also honored peace. She got her wish in 1908 when U.S. Sen. Elmer Burkett proposed making Mother's Day a national holiday That proposal was defeated, but by the next year, 46 states, as well as parts of Canada and Mexico, were holding Mother's Day observances.

Due to the tireless work of Anne, West Virginia became the first state to officially recognize Mother's Day in 1912. President Woodrow Wilson signed it into national observance two years later and declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
