Bites Nearby: Yama Sushi

Sushi, sushi and more sushi.

Overview:

There is a lot more than meets the eye when you look at Yama Sushi from the outside. The storefront at 515 Adams Shoppes in Mars looks small, but step inside and you are in a Japanese restaurant.

Yama Sushi has tea, coffee and soft drink products. You can also B.Y.O.B.

The extensive sushi and roll selections are a bit overwhelming even for big sushi eaters such as my two teen sons, Kenton and Cole, and me. After a couple of deep breaths and a few questions to our server, we were ready to order.

Appetizers:

There are a variety of appetizers including edamame, soybean cooked in salt water, for $3.95; shrimp shumai, a steamed shrimp dumpling, for $4.95; and soft shell crab for $7.95. Because our entrees came with soup or salad, we passed.

Entrees:

Another deep breath. The choices are amazing, and we were in heaven. Kenton chose a Hibachi Shrimp entree, and Cole chose a selection of three rolls -- California, spicy salmon and shrimp cucumber -- so they could share. I had spicy salmon roll and shrimp avocado. We went for lunch, and the roll combos were two rolls for $8.95, three for $11.95 – that is 18 pieces of sushi. Kenton’s lunch was $10.95.

Dinner sushi entrees cost $16.95 for 14 pieces to $24.95 for 24 pieces. There are also tempura selections, Japanese Fried Rice, Soba, and Yama – complete dinner box.

I can envision many trips to Yama Sushi with my sushi-loving family. [We will have to leave my husband at home, but my daughter, Eliza, is already jealous she wasn’t included in this trip and is planning our next dinner out.]

Desserts:

In traditional Japanese fashion, there are limited selections, but Yama Sushi has ice cream, fried ice cream and fried banana dragon – our choice. The three of us were stuffed – some doing for my sons - but we had to try the fried banana with ice cream. Thank goodness we did because it was delicious. Desserts are $3.95 to $5.95.

Services:

My sons thought our waitress was “adorable” and she was incredibly patient as she explained the various sushi and roll choices.

Overall thoughts:

If you like Japanese food, visit and visit often. If you don’t, call my husband and find a local burger joint.
