Mike Evancho says there is a fine line between helping to ensure daughter Jackie's success and appearing to exploit her.
As the countdown begins for the release of her second CD, “Dream With Me,” more and more people are again paying close attention to the amazing 11-year-old with the grown-up voice.
“It is tough to choose. We have to be careful to project the image that we want to maintain, but if we put too much out there, people are going to think we are exploiting our daughter,” said Evancho from his Richland Township home.
Jackie’s CD will be released June 14, and in preparation there are a few countdown events and promotions. One of those is a digital charm bracelet on Jackie’s official website at www.Jackieevancho.com/ where fans can click on the charm released for the day and hear one of the singles from the new CD. Fans also can take advantage of specials such as entering a contest to see Jackie at one of her performances this summer.
After Jackie’s success on “America’s Got Talent,” many companies have approached the Evanchos, wanting her endorsement or photo on their products. The Evanchos obtained the promotion company, Bravado, to handle the merchandising of Jackie products.
“The stipulation is that everything has to go through us,” said Evancho, referring to him; his wife, Lisa; and Jackie.
“Even though she is only 11, we want her to have a say in things. Lisa and I don’t want her coming back to us at 16 and saying, ‘Why did you put my face on this?’ or ‘Why did you handle my singing career this way?’”
The Evanchos also want to make sure that the Jackie products are quality merchandise.
“It doesn’t mean anything if we have a great photo of Jackie on a T-shirt but on really crappy material that falls apart after a washing or two,” he said.
He also gave Bravado input on the products as far as target audience.
“They had some really cute T-shirts, but Jackie’s audience is really an older audience so I suggested additional things like coffee cups,” said Evancho.
When she recently became spokesperson for , a project through the Humane Society of the United States targeted for children, Jackie increased her coverage in front of other children.
“We hear more and more that other children are watching Jackie or that their parents say that their little daughter idolizes Jackie,” said Evancho. “That delights us, of course, and also makes us want to protect her image.”
The Evanchos also get to choose the photos used for all of Jackie’s products and promotions. They are constantly looking at new products.
“I imagine the back-to-school items will be a big push later this summer, although I’m not sure how I feel about a Jackie book bag,” he joked. Evancho said they are also considering an actual charm bracelet, much like the digital charm bracelet on her official website.
In the next couple of weeks, Jackie will be busy with appearances before the CD release. Next week, her mother and older brother, Jacob, are headed for Jackie’s first European trip as they go to London where Jackie will appear on “Britain’s Got Talent,” the show that skyrocketed British phenomenon Susan Boyle’s career. Boyle appears on Jackie’s new CD in a duet.
Jackie will be on the June 4 show. While in England, she will also appear on their version of the “Today" show, said Evancho.
“After her appearance on ‘America’s Got Talent,’ we got the children’s passports in anticipation of something like this,” said Evancho. Jackie has been to Canada recently as well.
Earlier this year, Jackie recorded a concert in Sarasota, FL, that is slated to be shown the first week of June on PBS. According to information that Evancho provided, the concert will be telecast locally on WQED-TV at 6:30 and 11:30 p.m. June 5, 8 p.m. June 7, 12:30 a.m. June 8 and 1:30 p.m. June 9.
Jackie also will appear June 13 on NBC-TV's "Today" show.
Of course, Evancho hopes his daughter’s new CD sells well.
“It isn’t the traditional CD buying time, so I don’t think it will sell as fast as the Christmas CD, but I think we will see a slow and steady climb,” he said. “I think in the end, it will sell even better.”
