Seven Fields Surrounds Proposed "Cranberry Isle" Neighborhood

Cranberry's Planning Commission approved plans for the housing development at Monday's meeting.

Housing developments in Cranberry aren’t rare, but the township’s Planning Advisory Commission gave the thumbs up to an unusual proposed neighborhood on Monday.

“Cranberry Isle” is a planned residential subdivision of seven homes located off Old Mars Crider Road near the on Route 228. An existing older home will be one of the subdivision’s lots.

Sounds pretty typical so far, right? What makes the development out of the ordinary is that it’s on a plot of Cranberry land located in neighboring Seven Fields.

“It’s an island of Cranberry surrounded by Seven Fields,” said Ron Henshaw, Cranberry’s director of community development.

Henshaw said the uncommon property lines, which also led to the development’s name, resulted when Seven Fields seceded from the township in 1983.

“You get some odd things with that,” he said. “This is one of them.”

Property owner Pete Armstrong also had to work with Seven Fields and Cranberry on the project. While the township gives final approval for the neighborhood, Seven Fields issues the sewage and water permits for it.

Henshaw said the approval of the development is contingent on Seven Fields issuing the proper permits. The plans will next go before Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors for approval.

Cranberry Crossroads

Approval of plans for the proposed Cranberry Crossroads, a shopping center and office complex on Route 228, have been delayed until the Planning Commission’s June 6 meeting.

Plans for the development, at the site of a former campground, include 92,000 square feet of retail space, including a Dick’s Sporting Goods store; 90,000 square feet of business and office space; a 7,000 square-foot restaurant; a 4,200 square-foot bank with a drive-thru; and a 5,569 square-foot gas station and car wash.
