Route 228 Bridge Replacement Project Begins Monday in Adams Township

PennDOT is replacing a structurally deficient two-lane bridge with a five-lane edifice.

Big changes are coming to Adams Township—and it will have an effect on area commuters.

On Monday, PennDOT begins replacing the two-lane bridge over the CSX/B&O Railroad with a new five-lane edifice. According to PennDOT, the current bridge, which was built in 1961, is structurally deficient.

It carries about 16,122 vehicles per day on it, PennDOT said.

The $12.64 million project includes the replacement of the two-lane structure carrying Route 228 over the CSX/B&O Railroad with a two-span, continuous, composite steel multi-girder, five-lane structure.

There also will be improvements at the intersection of Route 228 and Mars-Valencia Road and a culvert extension over Breakneck Creek south of Mars Borough in Adams Township.

Additional work includes sanitary sewer relocation and other miscellaneous construction.

Traffic impacts will include nighttime lane restrictions and alternating traffic when necessary. Varying width restrictions may be in place at times throughout the project.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and minimize distractions while driving through work zones. Pay attention to flaggers and obey the traffic control devices; please drive responsibly in work zones.

Work is expected to be complete by September 2014.

I believe they say alternating traffic, it just means shifting the lanes of traffic to one side of the other, probably with a flagger in place to direct traffic cars through the roadway while it's under construction. No detours or anything like that.

When is PennDot going to replace the bridge on Freedom road over the turnpike? That bridge seems to be crumbling on a daily basis. Plus the tremendous bottleneck it creates.

ok, just wondering if they would be sending traffic down Brickyard Road, beings it run parellel with 228?

@Matt, that bridge will probably not be replaced until the PTC begins its "early action bridge replacement" on the section of Turnpike between Cranberry and Beaver Falls. @Jessica, does this plan still call for widening RT228 between the Mars-Valencia Road intersection and the Warrendale Road intersection? The initial plans called for RT228 to be widened to 5 lanes from just before the new bridge to just past the intersection with Warrendale Road.

Anthony Fasciani 6 seconds ago Last year I had spoken with someone at PennDot regarding the intersection of Rt 228 Eastbound and Warrendale Rd / Pittsburgh St. That approach from the East is in need of road work. Will that be included in the current project? If not, why not? Thank you, Tony
