Photos: Annual Harmony Christmas Market Draws a Crowd

Attracting more than 5,000 people to the area, the WeihnachtsMarkt is based on the open-air Christmas market in Germany.

Thanks in part to the weekend’s unusually warm and sunny weather (and no Steelers game) the annual WeihnachtsMarkt in Harmony attracted its largest crowd yet to the heart of the town’s historic district.

“They already come out for it even when the weather has been inclement, but not in this number,” said event chairwoman Gwen Lutz. “We’ve had a wonderful attendance and a really, really nice crowd.”

Now in its 22nd year, the WeihnachtsMarkt is based on the open-air Christmas market held in Germany and features a variety of German foods, crafts, activities for kids, antiques, horse-drawn wagon rides, German dancers and much more.

The event typically attracts about 5,000 people from around the region. This year, Lutz said 3,200 people had already been counted at the market—and that was just for Saturday.

Lutz added she has had people tell her they traveled from as far away as Alabama and Georgia to attend the market.

“We’ve had them come from quite a distance,” she said.

The market is sponsored by the Harmony Museum. All proceeds from the admission price to enter the market go toward running the museum.
