This Week’s Patch Picks: Five Book Suggestions from Library Director Leslie Pallotta.

"A Light in the Attic" by Shel Silvertein -- "Some silly poems, some sentimental poems, but all wonderful!" Pallotta said. “Guaranteed to make the young and young-at-heart smile.”

WHY:  "Captures the true spirit of Read Across America Day – something for everyone and tons of fun, too," said Pallotta.

"Al Capone Does My Shirts" by Gennifer Choldenko -- Twelve-year-old Moose lives on Alcatraz with his prison-guard father, his autistic sister and a cast of memorable characters.

WHY:  “Has the best ending I have ever read in any book – kids or adults,” Pallotta said. “Just left me with ‘WOW!’ ”

"Glass Castle: A Memoir" by Jeanette Walls -- Wall’s story of growing up with unorthodox parents is a testament to the endurance of the human spirit.

WHY: “A nod to non-fiction and just a darn good read,” said Pallotta.

"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseine -- The unforgettable and heartbreaking story of friendship, betrayal and redemption.

WHY: “In my opinion, the best work of fiction written in the past 10 years,” said Pallotta.

"Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen -- The story of a life in the circus, a forbidden romance and so much more.

WHY: “One of the few books that I have recommended that EVERYONE has liked , no exceptions,” said Pallotta.
