Holiday Worship: St. Ferdinand Church Decks the Halls

The church prepares for the Hanging of the Greens, a festive gathering on Sunday to decorate three evergreens.

Motorists on Rochester Road may have noticed three fat evergreen trees that lie waiting like sleeping giants on the front lawn of St. Ferdinand Church.

On Friday, the blue tarps come off and men will take the trees into the church to await decorations. The Hanging of the Greens, a festive gathering to dress up the trees before the evening Mass, takes place 1 p.m. Sunday.

The church also will serve breakfast from morning until noon. If you aren't the cookie-baking type, you may buy cookies at that time.

The church also will have a full slate of Masses for the holiday. Christmas Eve Masses are at 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and midnight with performances by the adult choir and brass ensemble.
