Hamster Ball Derby

When/Where: 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 2, Cranberry , 20111 Route 19.

Why Go: Does your kid have mice? Or hamsters, gerbils or rats?  Visit the Cranberry Petco for one of the most hilarious kid/pet events around. Using hamster balls as their vehicles, hamsters and other small pets will race down 8-foot tracks in heats of four en route to the finish line and a chance at derby glory. First-place winners receive a medal and a Kaytee Forti Diet Pro Health Small Animal Starter Kit, complete with food, bedding, a treat and a chew. Sorry, chinchillas, guinea pigs and other exotic pets – you’re not invited.

Lenten Fish Fry

When/Where: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, 2535 Rochester Road, Oldenski Hall, St. Ferdinand’s Church in Cranberry.

Why Go: Fish fries are a Western Pennsylvania Lenten tradition – even if you aren’t Catholic. If you haven’t been to one yet this year, pack up the family and head to St. Ferdinand’s this Friday for baked- or fried-fish dinners.  If the kiddies don’t like fish, they can choose a pizza dinner.  Don’t feel like going out?  Order takeout and eat at home.

Pricing: $8 for an adult dinner, $6 for child’s dinner.

TGIF Afternoon Escape

When/Where: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 1 in  Cranberry Township Parks & Recreation Gym, Cranberry Township Municipal Center, 2525 Rochester Road.

Why Go: This 90-minute break from the kids is a great weekday treat – no foolin’. Drop off your 3- to 6-year-olds for a movie, playtime in the gym and crafts while you enjoy a cup of coffee and a book, lunch with friends or whatever makes you smile.  Your child will need a packed lunch.

Pricing: $15 per child; $20 for non-residents.

Northern Tier Regional Library Used Book Sale

When/Where: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m Wednesday, April 6-11, Northern Tier Regional Library.

Why Go: Here’s a great way to stock up on children’s books without breaking the bank. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the used-book sale offers hundreds of children’s books from which to choose. Give your children their own tote bag and a few dollars. They’ll love choosing a collection of stories all their own.

Pricing: Free to browse; children’s hardback books 50 cents, paperbacks 25 cents.

Mario Lemieux’s Personal Trophy Collection

When/Where: Through April 17 at the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum in the Senator John Heinz History Center, 1212 Smallman St., Pittsburgh.

Why Go: Do you have hockey fans in your house? Are you a hockey nut yourself? Here is a chance to get up close and personal with rarely seen treasures from the personal collection of one of the game’s all-time greatest players. Your little sports fanatics can ooh and aahh over the jersey Lemieux wore in the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals, as well as 15 different trophies and other memorabilia.

Pricing: $10 for adults; $9 for senior citizens (ages 62 and older), $5 for students with valid school ID, $5 for children ages 4-17; free for children 3 and younger. Free for History Center members.
