Grab & Go Kids Planner: Family Flicks and Soaring Birds

Mother Nature socked us with another round of snow this week, but don't let that keep you at home.

This week’s round of adventures includes movies, baseball,  high-flying birds and swimming.

WINGS AT THE NATIONAL AVIARY

Where/When: National Aviary, Allegheny Commons West, 700 Arch St., Pittsburgh; now through May 15; 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. daily showings.

Why Go: This one-of-a-kind show in the National Aviary’s Helen M. Schmidt Theater offers a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with Aviary birds as they fly freely about the theater.  The show takes audiences to the rainforests of South America, the plains of Africa and throughout Europe and North America to learn more about the natural habitats of macaws, vultures, hawks, owls and other endangered birds.

Pricing: Free with paid admission to the Aviary -- Adults: $13, 
Seniors: $12, 
Children 2–12: $10.50. 

Children under 2 admitted free.

FRIDAY FLICKS AND FUN

Where/When: Cranberry Township Parks and Recreation Department, 2525 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township; Friday, Feb. 25, from 12:45 to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Your child will have a Fabulous Friday meeting new friends, watching "Despicable Me!" on the Big Screen, eating munchies and participating in a variety of activities. Moms will have a Fabulous Friday because they can run their weekly errands or, better yet, grab a friend and enjoy lunch without the kids! Have the kids wear tennis shoes in case they have gym time. Suitable for children ages 4-6.

Pricing: Program fee of $20 per child; resident discount program fee is $15 per child. Pre-registration required. Call 724-776-4806 x 1129 for info and registration.

CURIOUS LEARNERS

Where/When: , 4015 Dickey Road, Gibsonia Saturday, Feb. 26, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Why Go: There’s still snow on the ground but baseball season is right around the corner.  Treat your baseball-loving child to a taste of the days when Pittsburgh ruled the baseball world. Celebrate Black History month and discover the legends of the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords champion baseball teams from the 1930s and '40s. For children 7 and up and their caregivers.

Pricing: Free

PRE-SCHOOL OPEN GYM

Where/When: Pine Community Center 100 Pine Park Drive, Wexford; Wednesday, Feb. 23; 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Why Go: Spend some unstructured time playing with your favorite pre-school kid at this open gym time. Age-appropriate items such as mini-basketball, tumbling mats and hoops will be available.

Pricing: Free for members; $5 per child for non-members.

FAMILY SWIM

Where/When: Seneca Valley Intermediate High School swimming pool, 126 Seneca School Road, Harmony; Friday, Feb. 25, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm.

Why Go: It’s open to the public and all ages are welcome. Cannonball!
