Get Out: Eat Spaghetti and Run a Marathon for a Good Cause

Here's a peek at what's happening this weekend.

This weekend, we have many exciting outdoors events for you to attend, if you don’t mind a little rain. Yes, weather forecasters are calling for a soggy weekend with temperatures in the mid-50s, but don’t let rain ruin your parade – or your half-marathon. Check out Patch’s picks for the weekend.

1. Big Blue Quest 5K Run/2K Fun Walk

When/Where: 8 a.m. Saturday at , Babcock Boulevard and Ingomar Road, Allison Park. Event begins at South Ridge (pool area).

Why go: Besides good exercise, the walk is for a good cause. West Penn Allegheny Health Systems is the sponsor. The Big Blue Quest benefits colon and rectal cancer awareness and research.

Price: $10

When/Where: 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the on Rochester Road.

Why Go: Dance your way to a cure for cancer. Join Yoga Master Nancy Triscuit and Zumba experts Toni Sloan and Kelly Kochamba for this FUN-raiser. No registration is required. Water and light snacks will be provided. There also will be door prizes and giveaways at the event.

Price: Free, but donations will be accepted on behalf of the American Cancer Society.

3. Spaghetti dinner to Benefit Cpl. Dan Hahn

When/Where: 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Oldenski Hall in on Rochester Road.

Why Go: To show your for a longtime police veteran. Cranberry Police Cpl. Dan Hahn was in February after he fell from a bridge after a high-speed car chase. Hahn is undergoing physical therapy for injuries to his neck and back. There will a 50/50 raffle and a silent basket raffle at the event. All proceeds benefit Hahn and his family.

Price: There is a suggested donation of $6 per person.

4. Butler County Half Marathon

When/Where: The half-marathon kicks off at 8 a.m. Sunday at . The 5K begins at 8:15 a.m., and a Fun Run starts at 9:45 a.m. There will be an awards ceremony for the 5K at 10 a.m. The half-marathon award presentation is at 11:15 a.m.

Why Go: You'll always remember the event and not just because you get a commemorative T-shirt among the goodies. There also will be a special competition for the company or military unit with the largest participation across all events. The real fun will begin after runners cross the finish line with live music and refreshments.

Price: $60 per person for the half marathon, $25 per person for the 5K and $10 per person for the Fun Run. 

5. Steel City Showdown

When/Where: 8:30 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. Sunday on Federal Street in Pittsburgh near PNC Park. Start times vary, please check website for details.  

Why go: A unique bicycle race that promotes fitness, bicycle racing and the city of Pittsburgh, the race begins at Federal Street near PNC Park and continues across the Roberto Clemente and Andy Warhol bridges on an .8-mile closed course. Open to all riders, there will be prizes in categories for various levels including children 14 and younger, junior races for those younger than 19, and the masters category for participants older than 50.

Price: $5 to $30, depending on category.
