Community members create art from trash

Making art out of garbage has become a real art for some folks in Cranberry Township.

“That is an increase from our 10 entries last year, so we are becoming more well-known, but the main thing is that it is a fun thing to do to highlight our recycling program,” said Lorin Meder, Environmental Program Coordinator.

Meder said he was impressed with the various pieces of artwork made out of recycled pop tops, garbage bags, cardboard and other materials.

The five winners recognized for their recycled artwork are: first place: Clara Kana with her “plarn” creation; second place: Aly Mahoney with “Silver Vulpes”; and a three-way tie for third place: Emma McKee for her “Dragon Helmet”; Alexandra Miller with her “Soda Pop Pie”; and Pam Eastman for “Let Them Eat Cake.”

Kana received a $250 award for her artwork.

“She did some really great things with shopping bags,” said Meder, “Those are the biggest nuisance in the world for the environment and she used them for good work.”

Kana created what is known as “plarn,” a type of yarn created out of plastic shopping bags for her artwork. In addition to the cash award, she received the highly coveted “Garby Award,” a trophy made out of a recycled toy garbage truck that Meder mounted to a wooden plaque and added a brass tag. “It is some trophy,” he joked.
