Five Things You Need to Know This Week

1. Primary Election Day

2. Taverns on the Turnpike - Cranberry Genealogy Club

Stan Malecki presents "Taverns on the Turnpike" at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 22 at the Cranberry Public Library.

Malecki is the ‘Tavern Chef’ at The Old Stone House in Slippery Rock and does presentations on early American cookery methods. He is also an expert on Route 40, the original ‘Turnpike’ across Pennsylvania

Attendees at the event will get an understanding of how our ancestors traveled cross-country in historic times.

3. Cranberry Waterpark Opening Day

The pool’s open! The Cranberry Community Waterpark officially opens for business Saturday, May 25.

Weather permitting, the 15,000 square foot pool, which includes a 120-foot water slide, a zero-depth entry area, swimming lanes and a diving well, will be open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Labor Day, Sept. 2.

The water park is located at North Boundary Park.

4. Zelienople Derby Duckie Race

The event is sure to “quack” you up. The annual Derby Duckie race will be held at 10 a.m. at the Zelienople Pool on "opening day,” Saturday, May 25.

Duckies are on sale for $10 each. First place in the contest receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250 and the next 50-plus ducks in get prizes, baskets and gift cards.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Zelienople Park. To purchase a duck, email Alecia Flood at flood@zoominternet.net.

5. Memorial Day Services

Cranberry Township Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #879 will hold a ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 26 at North Boundary Park.

The American Legion Memorial Day service/procession in Zelienople will be held from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. Monday May 27 on Main Street.

Evans City will hold a Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26 at the Evans City Cemetery.
