Community Corner

9th Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of the Greater Cranberry Twp Area

Walkers from all over the southern Butler county area, and beyond, will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. This celebration of life brings together numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer in a unified effort to fight back.

Teams of enthusiastic citizens will gather at North Boundary Park for an overnight relay, from 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2012 until 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 22, 2012, that celebrates anyone who has battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost and empowers all to fight back against the disease.

Relay For Life is a unique fundraising event that allows participants from all walks of life — including patients, medical support staff, corporations, civic organizations, faith-based groups and community volunteers — to join together to fight cancer. Relay For Life reminds us that progress has been made in the fight against cancer and that everyone who participates is making a difference.

This year’s Rock’N Relay, 50’s themed, event will open as care givers (anyone who has ever helped a survivor and is not paid to do so) take the first lap. A festive atmosphere always develops around the track area at our Relay event.  Team members come together to celebrate and generate a festive, carnival like atmosphere where you can play games and walk the track for a great cause. The event is open to the public. All ages will enjoy the different events, games and entertainment available.  There is no admission or parking fees to attend. Free and open to everyone.

Featured entertainment this year includes performances by: local singing artist Sarah Khatami; Afterschool Buddy, Inc. performing their Rockin’ Radio Show; the Bell Scholl of Irish Dance; and Art Madness Action Painter George Williams. In addition, everyone is welcome to join in as we warm-up on Saturday with Zumba directed by Kelly Riddle owner/instructor from No Excuses Fitness in Zelienople, as well as a variety of carnival games, scavenger hunts, Minute to Win it challenges, kids tent with activities and mascots, and much more! Highlighting the evening is the Luminaria Ceremony, held after dark on Saturday evening to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost the battle against cancer. Hundreds of luminaria line the track and are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions.
