Elisabeth McCullough was just a few miles from her home on Main Street in Harmony Wednesday morning when the SUV she was driving spun out of control on icy Lower Harmony Road in Connoquenessing Township.

The vehicle skidded off the road and flipped over before striking a tree. McCullough, 32, survived the accident with minor injuries—her two young sons did not.

Liam Bintrim, 3, and Declan McCullough, who would have celebrated his first birthday Friday, were both killed when the roof of the vehicle caved in above where they sitting, according to KDKA.

State Police Lt. Eric Hermick told the news station it took rescue workers some time to access the children, but it appeared nothing could have been done to save them. Both children were properly belted and restrained, police said.

The fatal crash was one of about 50 accidents that took place around Butler County Wednesday morning due to icy road conditions. Route 422 in Summit Township also was shut down for several hours Wednesday because of multiple vehicle crashes.

In the wake of Wednesday's tragedy, a new donation site has been set up through gofundme.com to benefit the McCullough family.

Shawnelle Dodds said on the site she set up the page to raise money for McCullough, who she described as a good friend.

“My goal is (to) raise as much money as possible, as my friends were both hard workers, but I know at this time they will need all the help they can get,” Dodds wrote on the page.

The goal is to raise $7,500. By 3 p.m. Thursday, more than $4,685 in donations already had been made to the family.
