10 Cycling Safety Tips for Cranberry Residents

These tips will help cyclists and motorist keep Cranberry streets accident free.

With more cyclists rolling into Cranberry township, safety and caution are key to keeping Cranberry roads accident free.

Here are some tips from Brendan Linton, a cyclist and bicycle safety advocate from Cranberry. Concerned about pedestrian and bicycle safety, the former Seneca Valley High School student created his senior project as a video to advocate both.

Safety for Cyclists

  1. Always wear a helmet.
  2. Wear bright and noticeable colors in order to be visible to motorists.
  3. Ride with traffic and obey all traffic laws. Cyclists are not above the law.
  4. Stay off the sidewalks. Cyclists on sidewalks can hurt pedestrians.
  5. Be predictable.
Safety for Motorists
  1. Always leave four feet and reduce speed to pass motorists. It's the law.
  2. Use caution.
  3. Be observant in bike and pedestrian heavy areas, such as parks and neighborhoods.
  4. Expect that cyclists may come into your lane at any time.
  5. Just because a road doesn't have shared lane markings or signs, doesn't mean there will not be cyclists. Expect cyclists on any road.
Linton said if both motorists and cyclists learn to share the road and follow these rules, "Cranberry Township would stand out as a place to bike."
