Burning Season: The Rules for Recreational Fires in Cranberry

Knowing the rules can save homeowners a lot of money—and prevent tragedies from occurring.

Spring has arrived (finally!) and with it, recreational fire season.

Recreational fires are allowed within Cranberry as long as you know and follow the rules.

Fires are not permitted to be burned in the township during periods of high wind, extreme drought or other hazardous circumstances, according to Cranberry Township's fire protection code.

Just on Monday, area firefighters battled two brush fires that occurred within 30 minutes of each other in Adams Township. Days earlier, the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for much of western Pennsylvania because gusty winds and other factors presented dangerous fire weather conditions.

Here's a look at what's permitted in Cranberry:

Recreational Fires:

  1. Cannot exceed 3 feet in width and 2 feet in height.
  2. Must have a supervising adult present at all times and can't be closer than 25 feet to any structure or property line.
  3. Must be completely extinguished before the supervising adult leaves the fire location.
  4. Are limited to dry and seasoned tree wood, which is not rotted or rotting or construction wood which is not chemically preserved or treated, in order to avoid smoldering or offensive odors.
  5. Cannot be burned between midnight and 9 a.m., and all fires shall be contained via a fire ring.

Violators of any of the township's fire provisions face conviction of a summary offense and fines of up to $1,000 plus costs.
