Around the Rivers: Rocco Mediate and John Daly to Compete in Mylan Classic

Annual tournament to be held on Southpointe course.

 officials announced Monday that the 2011 tournament field will include PGA Tourfan favorites John Daly and .

The Mylan Classic is a professional golf tournament that is part of the PGA Tour's Nationwide Tour. The Mylan Classic was added to the Nationwide Tour in December 2009. This will be the second year for the Mylan Classic and will feature a field of 156-players.

Daly and Mediate also will lead a clinic beginning at noon Aug. 31.

Mediate, a Greensburg native, has six victories on the PGA Tour over the course of his 25-year career and is the defending champion of this year’s Frys.com Open in northern California.

Mediate, who often plays golf at the , finished second at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA, when he and Tiger Woods played in only the third sudden-death round in U.S. Open history. The second-place finish catapulted Mediate from 158th to 47th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Two-time major championship winner Daly, who played and won on the Nationwide Tour in 1990, will be competing for the first time in the Mylan Classic.

He has amassed five career PGA Tour victories, in addition to four international wins in South Africa, Asia and Europe.

The Arkansas resident also has committed to play in the Nationwide Tour’s News Sentinel Open in Knoxville, Tenn., which will be the week before the Mylan Classic.

"We are extremely excited to have had two seasoned veterans of the PGA Tour commit to play in the Mylan Classic,” said Rodney L. Piatt, Southpointe Golf Club president. “and now Rocco and John competing in the event, this year’s tournament is really going to be special.”

As a community event, the Mylan Classic offers championship golf and entertainment for the whole family.

Weekly tournament tickets for the Mylan Classic are $25 and include admission for the tournament and concerts by Jerrod Niemann, Steel Magnolia, Scott Blasey, Joe Grushecky and The Spinners.

Also scheduled for tournament week are Highmark's Youth Clinic, Washington Hospital's Women’s Golf Clinic, pro-am events, Pink on the Links, and a Military Appreciation Day.
