Samantha Mill, a Cadette Girl Scout in Cranberry Township, earns her Silver Award

After a year in the making, Sammy Mill completed all requirements for her Girl Scout Silver Award.  Sammy noticed that many children do not go outside to play, but instead spend a large majority of their time inside watching tv and using technological devices such as ipods, ipads, iphones, personal computers and a variety of game systems.  Sammy took it upon herself with her Silver Award project to get girls outside in the environment.  She didn't just want them to go outside and play, she wanted girls to really experience spending time in the out of doors.  Sammy looked into one of her favorite family past times, geocaching, and thought she could teach girls to geocache, too.  Sammy taught girls all the ins and outs of geocaching including what it is, how to use a GPS and how it works. The girls practiced using the GPS and then went off in search of geocaches that were selectively hidden by Sammy herself.  The day was not only fun for the girls and a huge success for Samantha, but an excellent learning experience for the girls who came to learn a new skill.
