A first-quarter foul shot can seem like a routine event, unless the basketball game is played before the entire senior high student body.
The Seneca Valley boys basketball team broke up its nightly routine of intense section play with an afternoon exhibition “student assembly” game against Perry Traditional Academy on Wednesday.
Perry showed why it leads the Pittsburgh City League with an 8-0 record and a 12-2 overall mark by putting on some offensive fireworks in the fourth quarter.
Perry outscored the Raiders 16-7 to come away with a 65-55 non-section victory.
Seneca Valley remained 2-5 in Section 3-AAAA, while slipping to 7-8 overall.
“Perry showed why they are a very solid basketball team,” Seneca Valley coach Victor Giannotta said. “Besides the actual game, it was an event for all the Seneca Valley students.”
Senior guard Christian Durbin led Seneca Valley with 18 points and junior guard Alex Maxfield tossed in 15 points.
Marcus Smith scored 27 points to set the pace for Perry.
Seneca Valley trailed 49-48 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Raiders will try to get back into the section playoff race starting at 7:30 Friday against visiting North Hills.
