Two people are receiving treatment to ward off rabies after bats were discovered inside a Cranberry Township home.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture issued a rabies alert after bats were found inside the home Saturday.

The bats got in through a fireplace, and two people were exposed, the alert said. The bats later tested positive for rabies.

In May, a Richland Township family also found a bat in their home that tested positive for rabies, according to the Allegheny County Health Department.

As a precaution, the family, which included one child, were treated with anti-rabies vaccines.

Anyone in Allegheny County finding a bat in his or her home is encouraged to report it immediately to the Allegheny County Health Department at 412-687-2243.

If you see a bat in your home and you’re sure that no human or pet exposure has occurred, shoo it outside or confine it to a room, keep your family and pets away from it, and call an animal control company to capture it and have it lab-tested for rabies, a statment from the Cranberry Township said.

If you have come into contact with the animal, seek medical attention right away.

If you do kill or catch a bat and the Department of Agriculture is not immediately available to test it, securely double-bag the bat’s remains and keep it cool—not frozen—until it can be delivered to the Department’s office. Live bats are not accepted.
